Just figured I'd share an example of what topaz adjust can do for you. It does a really nice job of simulating tone mapping and gives you both preset and flexibility for controlling color and exposure. The nice thing is that you can do it with just one image (this is from a point and shoot a few years ago), and it's fairly cheap $50.
I see that it really does work. Trouble for me is paying for it!
